Interview With One of Europe’s Leading Cannabis Researchers, Dr. Gianpaolo Grassi

As cannabis becomes more accepted worldwide reseachers can finally start studying the plant and increasing our collective understanding of it. Some researchers however have had the possibility to study it for a long time already with special cultivation licences granted by states they live in. For instance, in Israel cannabis has been actively studied since 1964, most notably by professor Raphael Mechoulam, the first person to isolate, analyze and synthesize the THC molecule. Another one of early starters is Italy’s Dr. Gianpaolo Grassi who has been researching cannabis since 1994 as part of a government funded agricultural research institute called CREA-CI.

Since 2015 Dr. Grassi has been testing a variety of light spectra (HPS and LED) to understand what light spectrum the cannabis plant benefits from the most. The LEDs were provided by Valoya, the LED manufacturer that heavily invests into research. Over three years and three rounds of trials a great variety of light spectra have been tested, some completely different from one another and some with slight modificiations to the radiation from particular parts of the spectrum. Based on this research Valoya has developed its Valoya Canna+ LEDs, a line of premium quality grow lights optimized for cultivation of cannabis. The balanced spectrum is the widest in the market, spanning from UV-A to far red and resulting in high, consistent yields of cannabinoid rich plants.

In the interview below, Dr. Grassi discusses these trials as well the value medicinal cannabis will bring to the global population. He is optimistic about the proliferation of cannabis acceptance and believes that unlocking the full medicinal potential of the plant will enable us to live longer and improve the quality of our lives.
